Photo of CPT , Atlantic Avenue - 1919

The CPT, Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company, was one of the top companies to have a location in Franklin. The company took over the Grant Company in 1901 which had produced lathes, boring mills, drilling machines and railway machinery. In 1902 when the Franklin Air Compressor Company had financial difficulties, the CPT also took over that company which had been producing air hoists.

After WWI the plant expanded rapidly and additional buildings were constructed for a machine shop, power plant and offices. In 1925 the company acquired patent rights to produce the famous Benz Diesel engine. During WWII the plant was in war production, producing aircraft engine accessories for fighter planes in addition to compressors.
