In 1910, Dr. E. W. Moore of Franklin presented an outline of the early work of doctors at the meeting of the Venango County Medical Society that was held at Monarch Park. The full text of his outline can be found in the July 19, 1910 edition of the Evening News. The following is an excerpt from this article:
“Doctors in the County in 1867
From the best sources at hand the following physicians were in the county in 1867 and eligible to membership: Drs. B. Gillett, S. G. Snowden, S. S. Proter, W. S. Welsh, J. R. Arter, T. W. Egbert, A. G. Egbert, F. F. Davis, J. B. Glenn, H. H. Seys, R. Crawford, J. M. Dille, W. L. Whann, F. H. Johnston, D. C. Galbraith, W. C. Tyler, J. M. Follett, L. H. Christie, John Pettit, M. C. Egbert, J. M. Foster, B. F. Hamilton, T. W. Sampson, G. W. Cary, Gillespie, Bishop, W. W. Powell, Davies, Wynn and Shugart.
The first meeting of the Medical Society was held on May 8, 1867 in the Kinnear Hotel and in 1869 the constitution and by-laws were signed.
The following information about the early physicians is from History of Venango County, 1890, Chapter XIV, pages 190 – 198.
PETER FAULKNER came to Franklin in 1820, but moved to Woodstock, Crawford County, within a brief period. He was quite successful both as a surgeon and practitioner. He died at Erie, January 13, 1876, in the eighty-sixth year of his age.
GEORGE R. ESPY also located in Franklin in 1820. He was born February 21, 1796. His academic education was obtained at Bedford, Pennsylvania and his professional training was under the tutorship of Doctor Peter Allen of Knisman, Ohio. In 1831 he retired from practice; in the winter of 1845-46 he removed to Fort Madison, Iowa where he was engaged in milling and merchandising until his death, February 21, 1849.

NATHANIEL DUFFIELD SNOWDEN began his professional career in this county in 1828 at Emlenton and later moved to Franklin. He was born at Harrisburg, November 28, 1803, son of Reverend Nathaniel Randolph and Sarah (Gustine) Snowden, the latter a daughter of Doctor Lemuel Gustine, a surgeon in the American army during the Revolution. Doctor Snowden married on the 27th of April, 1833 to Jane McClelland, daughter of George McClelland. Doctor Snowden died September 30, 1864, in the sixty-first year of his age.
BUCKLAND GILLETT was born in Schoharie County, New York, September 18, 1807. His parents were natives of Connecticut, who emigrated to Schoharie County and then to Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York. In 1829 he began practice at Titusville, Pennsylvania, but in May of 1834 he moved to Franklin where he made his home and continued practice for nearly half a century. On April 30, 1832, he married Sarah Byles, daughter of Ebenezer Byles of Allegheny Township. They had one child, Annette, wife of R. L. Cochran. Dr. Gillett died October 19, 1881.
GEORGE W. CONNELY read medicine with Doctor Espy and practiced at Franklin for several years. He was born in Allegheny Township, September 3, 1804, son of Isaac Connely, a pioneer in that part of the county. Dr. Connely was married on September 14, 1826 to Margaret Lowry of Meadville, Crawford Co., Pa. His death occurred January 13, 1851.
SAMUEL GUSTINE SNOWDEN, eldest son of Doctor Nathaniel Duffield Snowden, was born at Franklin, Pennsylvania, December 21, 1837. In boyhood he had chosen his profession and had spent many hours in his father’s office, under supervision, studying the elementary principals of medical science. In October, 1857, he matriculated at the Philadelphia College of Medicine. He graduated March 3, 1859, receiving his diploma soon after his twenty-first birthday. He established himself permanently at Franklin and continued in the active duties of an extensive practice until 1883, when failing health compelled him to relinquish professional work. Dr. Snowden and wife, Mary Judson, moved to Ashville, North Carolina where it was hoped that the mountain air might prove beneficial. He died there on August 22, 1884 and his remains were brought home for burial in Franklin Cemetery.
WALTER LOWRIE WHANN, son of Robert S. and Elizabeth Lowrie Whann, was born and raised in Mineral Township. In 1841 he entered New Hagertown Academy in Carroll Co., Ohio and in the following year became a student at the Franklin College in New Athens, Ohio. Upon completing a literary course in June, 1847, he immediately began the study of medicine. In 1849 –50 he attended a course of lectures at Starling Medical College in Columbus, Ohio and in 1850 he began the practice of medicine at Clintonville. He attended a second course of lectures at Starling Medical College in 1855 –56. During the civil war he was appointed surgical director for the district in which Venango County was situated. In 1867 – 68 he took a special course at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and graduated in 1868. He located at Franklin soon after his graduation. Dr. Whann was married in 1865 to Frances Emerett Jones of Randolph, New York.
J. R. BORLAND began practice at Harlansburgh, Pennsylvania in 1851 and located at Franklin in 1865, graduating at the Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery in 1865 and at the Georgia Eclectic Medical College in 1880.
ISAAC St. CLAIR came to Franklin in 1880.
E. W. MOORE graduated at the University of Wooster, Cleveland, Ohio in 1869and came to Franklin in 1871.
D. C. GALBRAITH began his practice in this county at Polk in 1862 and then came to Franklin in 1871.
W. A. NICHOLSON graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, in 1876.
E. P. WILMONT graduated from the Homeopathic Hospital College of Cleveland in 1882 and soon after located in Franklin.
STEPHEN BREDIN graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1856, his professional work since that date having been principally done at Butler, whence he removed to Franklin in 1883.
J. W. LEADENHAM came to Franklin from Edenburg, Clarion County in 1883. He graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College.
G. B. STILLMAN, after graduating from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Baltimore in 1880, commenced practice at North East, Erie County, subsequently removing to Amite City, Louisiana, Atlanta, Georgia, and to Franklin in 1885.
J. B. GLENN came to Franklin in 1887, but had practiced at Polk and Freedom in this county for some years previously. He graduated at Jefferson Medical College in 1872.
T. A. IRWIN graduated at the College of Homeopathy, Chicago, in 1888, and began practice in Franklin after that time.
JOHN M. DOUDS came to Franklin from Mercer in 1889.
