16. William Henry Harrison Birge House
This charming Italianate home on Elk Street features tall arched windows and 4 bays. There is a back frame section of the home that was probably the original home of William & Louise Birge in 1874. It appears the front section of the old home was removed and the brick house that joins the original building was constructed in 1881.
William Henry Harrison Birge, was a Civil War veteran. Mr. Birge served three years, enlisting on June 29, 1861 at Adrian, Michigan and being mustered out at Detroit on June 28, 1864. He was present at the siege of Yorktown in April and May of 1862 and while working in the trenches at that place came into possession of a relic of the Revolutionary War, a solid cannon ball of about six inches caliber, evidently fired from one of the guns of Lord Cornwallis before his surrender to General Washington. At the battle of New Bridge on May 24, 1862, the unit to which Mr. Birge belonged vanquished a Louisiana Tiger regiment and was personally complimented by General McClellan.
