Lewis, George - PROMINENT CITIZEN TAKES OWN LIFE George Lewis a suicide Fires Revolver Bullet into Brain at his Home -- was temporarily insane [family story says he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and didn't want to put his wife thru nursing another dying loved one] George Lewis one of Oil City's most prominent business men, Vice President of Oil City Trust Co and one of the most preeminent philanthropists of the County committed suicide by shooting himself (snip way to hard to read) Mr Lewis was twice married. His first wife was Miss Sarah Bowman [his first cousin] of Titusville. His second wife was Miss Maimie Lewis [another first cousin], the wedding taking place May 15 1911. The wedding was followed by a long visit abroad and after their return they spent the winter in California. Beside his wife he is survived by two brothers James of Avon Ohio and William of Iowa and two sisters Mrs Polly Ponting of Cleveland and Nellie Briggs of Richmond Ind For many years he was identified with the Seep Purchasing Agency with headquarters in Oil city (can't read word) with the dissolution of Standard Oil Company in January. Lewis, Mrs Anna [Cogan or Coogan] - Oil City Derrick 6 May 1901 Mrs George Lewis Mrs Anna [Cogan or Coogan] Lewis, wife of George Lewis, the well known engineer of the National Transit pump Station, died at the family residence no [can't read it but it was 718] West First St, at ??? o'clock on Sunday evening. The deceased had been ailing since last Christmas but no apprehension of the serious nature of her illness was felt by her family until Sunday, when her attending physician advised Mr Lewis to have his son Philip, who is in Akron, O come home at once. Mrs Lewis was born in Dublin, Ireland, April ?? 18?? but came to America with her parents when an infant, they locating in the state of New York. In 18?? she was married to George Lewis, near the then thriving oil town of Petroleum Center. and lived there until 18?? when she came with her husband and family to Oil City, making their home here since that time. The deceased was a woman of piety, notably devoted to her husband and family and a splendid neighbor whose death has brought sorrow to a wide circle of friends as well as to her relatives. She was an active and long time member of the Second Presbyterian church where she will be specially ???? and mourned. The arrangements for the funeral have not been completed but the services and internment will be held in Oil City, the time to be announced later. Lewis, George -THE DERRICK OIL CITY PA 30 Dec 1901 George Lewis a well known employee of the National Transit company's Third ward station and cousin of George Lewis of the ????? generating agency at Oil City died at 6:?9 o'clock on Sunday morning at his home on West First Street from paralysis which seized him a week ago last Friday. The deceased (I think is what it says) was born in Wiltshire County, England Sept 18 1840 [There are gaps where I just could not make it out] Following the death of his father George Lewis came to the oil country (snip) where he had been employed until last May during that month his wife died and the shock of her death is thought to have brought on....He was especially devoted and faithful to his wife and indulgent with his children and the member of his family have the sympathy of the entire community... He is survived by his son Philip of Akron, O who has been (caring??) his father for a week preceding his death and three daughters, Mrs Maude Smith who occupied a house at the rear of the Lewis residence on West First St and Misses Mamie and Victoria at home. He was a nephew of Mrs William [Mary Lewis] Lowrie of Titusville and cousin of Arthur and William Lowrie formerly of Oil City Oil (can't make out word) now engaged in business in Pittsburgh. Mr Lewis was a member of the AOUW fraternity and of Petrolia Lodge no 53 F&AM. The funeral services will be held at the family residence at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev S(maybe) A. Lewis, Mrs Sarah Bowman - Oil City Derrick (Oil City, Pennsylvania) > 1910 > July > 22 Mrs George Lewis Mrs Sarah BOWMAN LEWIS, wife of George LEWIS, a prominent official of the Standard Oil Company and vice-president of the Oil City Trust Company died at the family residence no 5 East Bissel avenue at 9 o'clock Thursday evening. She had been in ill health for nearly ten years and had been confined to her bed the past four months. Mrs Lewis was born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England January 25 1837 and when 16 years of age came to this country with relatives, who located in Titusville, and where she was married to Mr Lewis, April 8 1869. Shortly after their wedding they went to Cleveland coming from that place to Oil City in 1872, which has been her home continuously from that year until he time of her death. The deceased is mourned by a large number of personal friends in Oil City, Titusville, and Cleveland who were drawn to her by her many lovable traits of character not the least of which was her unbelief in anything she heard derogatory to the character of anyone. She was a striking example of loyalty and devotion to her husband an ideal helpmeet, comforter and adviser, staunch in her friendships, greatly given to charity in the most unostentatious ways and her chief pleasures were found in her home. (snip) She was a member of the First Presbyterian church of this city, and active and generous in her support and in the aid of it institutions. She is survived by her husband and three sisters, Mrs Mary BARNES [Mother of Alfred Barnes of Oil City], Mrs Fannie BARNES and Mrs Julia DAY, all of England. The funeral services will be held at the family residence at 7:30 o'clock this evening and the interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery Cleveland, Saturday afternoon. The body will leave via the Erie Railroad at 5:15 am Saturday and will arrive in Cleveland at ?:?? pm and will be taken direct from the station to the place of burial.
