Prothonotaries - Originally appointed by Governor for 3-year term. The office became elective under the Constitution of 1837-38. Prior to 1857, one person had the duties of prothonotary, clerk of the court of quarter sessions, of oyer and terminer, general jail delivery, recorder of deeds, register of wills and clerk of orphan's court. After 1857 the duties were divided - see Register and Recorder below.
