Sandy Creek Twp. received its name in 1834. The eastern part was revised in 1856 and the erection of Mineral Twp. in 1870 and that of Victory Twp. in 1876 reduced Sandy Creek Twp. to its present area. The borough of Waterloo/Polk is included in this township.

Early Schools
The first school house in this area was built in 1819 on the land of Alexander McELHANEY. Isaac BUNNELL was the first teacher.
John FOSTER appropriated a room in his own house and employed teachers for his children and those of his neighbors.
A hewn-log house was built at the Graham cemetery in 1834.
In 1836 another school house was erected on property that was later owned by James FOSTER.

Early Churches
Sandy Creek Methodist Church - Rev. Ira EDDY organized the class at the house of James CANNON. Among first members were: Alexander McELHANEY, Welden ADAMS, Saulsburg VINCENT, Jonathan PRATT, & Aaron McKISSICK.
Pleasant Grove Methodist Church - organized at the Graham school house. William & Robert GRAHAM and Elijah MORRISON were prominent members. The place of worship was erected in 1872 by the following committee: William DEWOODY, John HILL, John BOALS, & John GRAHAM.
East Grove Methodist Church - formed at the house of the John FOSTER family. John & Mary FOSTER and sons - Ross, James & Caleb; and David & Mary SMITH were the first members. John CHANDLER was the first preacher. Jackson GORDON gave the ground for the church building and the building committee consisted of: James SMITH, Robert GRAHAM & Miller GRAHAM.
Bethel Grove Church, Church of God - organized by A.C. MORRISON, David HERMAN, David SMITH, Immanuel KUNTZ, Osborne BROWN & others who worshipped in a school house until 1871 when the church was built. William SMITH & Amos SHONTZ were active in the building of the church.
